A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of the clear, thin tissue that lays over the white part of the eye and the cornea. Although several facotrs could be the cause, more commonly we see the growth occur with people with execcisve exposure to outdoor exposure.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a pterygium include burning or irritation on the inner edge of the cornea. It is typically painless, but sometimes raised and bothersome.

Pre-Surgery

The pterygium surgery is a minimally invasive surgery, which takes no more than 30 to 45 minutes. Your Joseph & Swan Eye Care team will provide you with general guidelines to prepare for your pterygium surgery. You may be required to fast or only eat a light meal beforehand. Also, if you wear contact lenses, you may be asked to not wear them for at least 24 hours before the procedure. Because you’ll be lightly sedated, doctors will require you to arrange transportation after the surgery, as you’ll be unable to drive yourself.

What to expect

WeYour doctor will numb your eyes to prevent discomfort, then clean the surrounding areas. Your surgical team will will remove the pterygium and associated conjunctiva tissue. Once the pterygium is removed, your doctor will replace it with a graft of associated membrane tissue to prevent recurrent pterygium growths.
